Country Dominates in City vs. Country Wheelchair Rugby League Decider

The City vs. Country Wheelchair Rugby League series came to an epic close on Saturday, with Country putting on a powerhouse performance to claim the deciding match 118-26.

With the series locked at 1-1, this final clash was more than just a game—it was a chance for players to impress ahead of upcoming representative team selections. And impress they did.

Country came out firing, leading 48-20 at halftime before turning on the afterburners in the second half. Bayley McKenna delivered a standout performance with a staggering seven tries and 12 conversions. He was well-supported by Pete Arbuckle, who crossed for four tries, and Zac Schumacher, who added three tries and five goals of his own.

City weren’t without their moments, with Dan Anstey and Dylan Gawthorne both bagging two tries, and Shannon Buxton also crossing the line. But they struggled to contain Country’s relentless attacking pressure in the final 40.

Despite the scoreboard, City captain Dan Anstey was proud of his team’s resilience and fight.

Country captain Pete Arbuckle credited their preparation—particularly the hard work put in by the team in Townsville—for the emphatic win.

With Maroons squad selection looming, performances from both teams will be carefully reviewed. The match not only showcased incredible individual skill and teamwork but also gave selectors a final opportunity to assess players' readiness for the next level.

Now, the focus shifts to the announcement of the Queensland Maroons Wheelchair Rugby League squad—where the best from both camps will earn their chance to represent their state.
